“I work with adults, children and young people who have experienced trauma and often exhibit signs of dissociation and use a range of therapeutic techniques to fully process these complex life events. I sometimes work with the parent/caregiver in the room which supports the work being taken from the therapy room and tools and techniques being implemented at home. I offer therapeutic parenting strategies and support within the sessions with children or as a separate intervention when appropriate.
I first went to night school to train to be a counsellor because my son (then aged 9) had been diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) and I had read that there was no better person to be around someone with his diagnosis than someone with counselling skills.
As part of my course, I had to attend my own therapy sessions to work through the residue of my own past traumatic experience, which included being in a relationship where I was subjected to domestic violence, some of which was witnessed by my son.
As I processed my own experience, it started becoming more apparent to me that perhaps my own child did not have ADHD, but was actually experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociation. Over the next few years, I learned as much about this subject as I could (and am still learning!) convinced that this was a more accurate description of my child.
Knowing that PTSD and Dissociation in children was a real thing, I decided that what was needed was a therapeutic service that focused on this and filled the gap between general counselling and children being medicated, without past known trauma being fully processed. The service did not exist and so in 2018, I founded ‘The Gap (Bedfordshire) LTD’ which is now a CIC.
Alongside this, I am the founder of ‘JV Trauma Tools and training Ltd.’ which provides training to parents and professionals. I am also a motivational speaker and author of five books and workbooks that focus on symptoms of PTSD, including emotional regulation, dissociation and anxiety.”
